MARIANNE & HILLY

I still remember the night my friend Hilly Michaels
woke me up with a phone call from the road to hell. "You must meet my new
girlfriend, Marianne," he said. I just couldn't get back to sleep. I knew
he was a goner & I was right.
When the dust had finally cleared,
and rehab rehad, Hilly had been laid way low. Two such talented people,
oy
vey iz meer, such a pity. Was he stranded in dreamland? Perhaps, but
until you read her opinion of him in her autobiography, you ain't seen
stranded.
I actually benefited from their association,
perverse creature that I am under this blandly agreeable exterior.
There was a song that I was writing with John Waite, (Just Like Lovers),
and after we put it on his album, it took another direction at my home
studio. I had ideas. So one night after dropping Hilly off
at friends, on the way uptown, I asked Marianne if she'd come by and sing
on my demo version of it for a mode$t amount of bux.
She called back later, asking me if I had been
serious about the offer. I was, and so she came over, made me get Earl Grey
Tea from the Korean, and spent the better part of the night working over
the lyrics with me and then singing it in her gritty classy style.
The words had to be really real for her to sing them, much more so than
I was accustomed to writing. So thank you Marianne, but could you have
been gentler on Hilly? Maybe not. He's married a Peruvian Siamese
with, according to him, the most electric feeling skin he's ever touched
* , so maybe I guess it's ok after all.

(^ Hilly is a great drummer who also had two albums out on Warners
in the early eighties.
When I was doing my indy artist trip, Hilly would come into the studio,
sit down at the drumkit, eat a Hershey's with Almonds, and say, "Roll the
tape, just signal me when the chorus is coming up." He'd then invent and
play the perfect drum beat in usually one take, to every song I had. And
he didn't charge me a penny! We work well together. . .in later years we'd
produce hopeless acts brilliantly together.)

(* If you ever met Carol Mosner, Hillys former girlfriend, (the one
he
wrote the song Gemini for,) you'd realize how intense his PeruvianThai
must be. Because Carol is definitely from Venus, or Atlantis or
somewhere else heavenly. I wrote her a song too, ("And the Band Played
On...")
shes so perfect, purr-fect. . . smart too. . . she's in a room, you
FEEL her there...
so caring, her eyes are so green, her skin is so white, her voice is
so soft,
her look is so knowing and understanding, her face is so beautiful,
shes so
slim, so graceful...so I guess I can't get over her...or my memory
of her: a
very slippery and different animal...Hi Carol. Good luck with your
new
career. Too bad the German didn't work out, I always thought Desi the
Sushi Heir was more in keeping. Come visit me in a dream sometime.
Soon.

ok? And Marianne, as you know, Im still a fan.
