<span class="text1596Font1" >The misuse of alcohol, prescription drugs, and over-the-
counter medications, and, of course, the use of illegal drugs,
are persistent problems in the workplace. Let’s look at a few
facts. Most people who use illegal drugs and drink heavily
are employed. According to the most recent national
surveys: 8.0% of full-time workers are current users of illegal
drugs, 11.6% of part-time workers are current users of illegal
drugs, 17.2% of the unemployed labor force (the applicant
pool) use illegal drugs, About 9% of all full-time employees
are classified as heavy drinkers This training focuses on
illegal drugs and the Federal Drug-Free Workplace Program
that covers all Federal Government employees and requires
them to be drug-free as a condition of employment. Some
federal agencies are part of the transportation industry – or
have employees required to hold commercial driver’s
licenses – and are also required by Department of
Transportation regulations to test employees for alcohol
misuse. These regulations are covered in Module 13.</span ><span class="text1596Font3" style="background-color:transparent" >
