impairment is suspected, there are several actions you
should take: Take the employee aside, and ask if they are
okay. Explain that you have observed indicators of drug use
or impairment and are initiating a reasonable suspicion drug
test. Initiate the test by informing your supervisor of your
observations and suspicions and follow the procedures in
your organization's drug-free workplace plan. Once you have
higher level verbal concurrence, explain to the employee that
a reasonable suspicion drug test has been authorized and
that you – or another management official – will transport the
employee to the collection site and then home. Explain any
other administrative actions outlined in your organization's
drug-free workplace plan. For example, many organizations
place employees on administrative leave following a
reasonable suspicion drug test pending the results. Stay
calm, be formal, directive, and professional. Remember that
your observations and suspicions have been reviewed and
that a team of higher-level officials in your organization has
concurred that a reasonable suspicion drug test is
appropriate. Do Not! Do not engage in a discussion with the
