assess the situation quickly. If the employee is
unresponsive, appears to be in medical distress, or may be a
threat to him or herself or to others, you have an emergency
situation. Call 9-1-1 immediately and then notify and
summon your security staff. Otherwise, inform your own
supervisor and ask him or her to act as a second witness. If
your supervisor is not available, ask another supervisor or
colleague or your organization's Drug Program Coordinator to
confirm your observations. If possible, you should always
have a second credible witness to corroborate your
observations and conclusions. However, if another
supervisor is not available, you should act anyway based on
your best judgment.
