<span class="text9476Font1" >The EAP is primarily a resource for employees and their
family members. Ideally, employees with personal,
behavioral, or family problems will resolve them with
counseling and assistance from the EAP and without
supervisor or management involvement—before problems
impact job performance. Many employees do exactly this –
but some do not. The EAP is also a resource for supervisors
whenever employee performance problems occur. EAP staff
will work with supervisors to help them identify and refer
troubled employees. The supervisor then focuses on job
performance while EAP professionals help troubled
employees assess and clarify their problems and get the
help they need. The EAP is an especially important resource
when employee performance or behavior problems could be
drug-related. The EAP has specialized knowledge and skills
with drug-related problems, and has specific responsibilities
under your organization's drug-free workplace plan. When a
finding of drug use has been established, the referral to the
EAP is a mandatory management action. The EAP is
responsible not only for employee assessment and referral,
but also for monitoring the employee throughout the
prescribed treatment plan and reporting general information
about participation and progress to management, within the
confines of Federal law regarding such disclosures.
