programs that use a prevention/treatment philosophy to
address a range of individual and family problems. They
provide services for employees, and often for family members
as well, that are paid for by the employer. EAPs not only
provide assessment and referral to substance abuse
counseling, but they also address financial, legal, marriage
and family, mental and behavioral health, smoking cessation,
exercise, weight loss, and other health-related issues.
Employees may contact the EAP directly, without notifying
supervisors or management, to arrange for counseling,
assessment, and referral to other services. When
employees contact the EAP directly and on their own – and
not as the result of a formal referral – everything is strictly
confidential.
