of guidelines outlined by the Department of Health and
Human Services for the Federal Drug-Free Workplace
Program. Urine samples are collected by trained technicians
on-site, at a collection center, or in a doctor's office. The
specimen is split into two containers. The second specimen
will only be tested if the employee wishes to challenge the
results of the first test. All drug testing is accomplished in
certified laboratories. At the lab, the urine sample is first
tested under a screening procedure to determine if there is a
presence of a drug. Samples that test positive under the
screening procedure are further tested in a confirmation
process using highly precise gas chromatography/mass
spectrometry or similar equipment. This process not only
establishes the presence of a drug but also determines the
quantity, or concentration level, of the drug. But, as you will
see on the next screen, the presence of a drug does not
necessarily mean that a positive drug test result will be
reported.
