He's best known in music circles as a solo performer using innovative finger style techniques to lay down percussive instrumental grooves on electric-acoustic guitar. He has also become well known in the flourishing performance poetry scene. Nelson is musical director for the poetry performance group "Bruce Weber's No Chance Ensemble". They've recently released their self-produced debut CD "Lets Dine Like Jack Johnson Tonight". In addition Nelson Alxndr has shared the stage with some of poetry's brightest talents including Reg E. While winning fans with his energetic stage performances, ever-changing hip style and somewhat wicked sense of humor, Leatherwood has earned the respect of fellow peers for his musicianship, professionalism, strong organizational skills and classically current array of gear. David began his career in the music business as bass player and band-member with the ethereal, dual-female fronted alternative-rock group STAR 69 in 1995. The band, signed to Hollywood Records, recorded an EP produced by Tony Visconti (of David Bowie fame) which charted in the College Music Journal (CMJ). STAR 69 toured regionally in support of the record, until disbanding in late 1996. Deciding to concentrate on his songwriting, Leatherwood began a rigorous schedule of solo-acoustic performances throughout the tri-state area, favoring his Taylor 12-string and drawing from a catalog of over 150 original songs. David appeared on many syndicated cable programs such as: Gripe, Obsessed & Fast Folk Revue and became a member of ASCAP both as songwriter & publisher (Cocky Rooster Grooves). Accepting an �offer he couldn�t refuse,� David returned to his role as band-member by joining newly signed MACH FIVE (Island Records), as bass player and backup vocalist. The band released its debut record in 1999 (produced by Steven Haigler, fresh off success from the first Fuel record) to glowing reviews from Billboard, Guitar & Guitar World and toured nationally throughout the year. A week away from shooting a video for their first single in Las Vegas, performing at Club LaVela for Spring Break in Panama City, the boys were abruptly sent packing when Island fell into turmoil following the infamous Universal buyout of Polygram. The group disbanded shortly thereafter. Deciding to refocus on his song writing, Leatherwood co-founded the alternative-pop duo 2 with singer-songwriter Joe Condiracci in late 1999. Both reviving and expanding upon the traditional duo format, David & Joe shared equally in song writing, lead vocal & lead guitar roles. The band�s debut, self-titled, self-produced, six-song EP �2�(Albertine Records) received critical praise from such industry stalwarts as CMJ & FMQB and the first single, �Angel,� peaked at #12 on BillBoard�s Adult Contemporary Chart. After performing last March in Austin for the SxSw Music Festival, 2 recorded with legendary producer Tom Dowd (Aretha Franklin, Eric Clapton, Lynyrd Skynyrd) at Criteria Studios in Miami, and appeared live several times on the nationally syndicated radio program, �The Joey Reynolds Show.� Poor management and creative differences caused the duo to split last spring. Ever seeking new artistic challenges, David began performing with the cutting-edge electro/rock band PURACANE in 2000. Their debut record, �Things You Should Leave Alone� (Ubiquity Records), generated mass radio and TV play. Tracks appeared in �Felicity,� MTV�s �Real World� & �Road Rules,� and the record rose to #5 on Billboard & Rolling Stone�s College Chart. PURACANE has toured nationally, opening for such acts as Duran Duran, Sting, Depeche Mode & Aerosmith, and recently began recording a new record. Teaming up with long-time friend and accomplished songwriter PATTI ROTHBERG, whose debut record �Between the 1 & the 9� (EMI Records) featured the mega-hit �Inside,� Leatherwood joined Patti�s band in April of 2001 on bass and background vocals, touring regionally in support of her new release �Candelabra Cadabra� (Cropduster). Most recently, David completed a recording session on lead guitar at SONY MUSIC Studios for developing artist ERIN JIVIDEN, and has accompanied her live on both lead-electric guitar and 12-string acoustic, since December of 2001. More extensive recording soon followed with the power-pop/punk group EVIL JAKE. Providing his signature melodic-yet-aggressive bass grooves, Leatherwood helped the group complete its first full-length album with producer Adam Lasus (Helium, Gigolo Ants). David has been performing live with EVIL JAKE (voted best unsigned band in a recent Jim Beam online contest) both locally & regionally. Over the course of his musical career, David has traversed a variety of styles and genres, performing alternately as solo-singer-songwriter, lead vocalist, band member and sideman.
