He built the house as a wedding gift for his wife, Annie Clayton Vandiver. The home reflects the wealth and prominence of Murray Vandiver who served as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, State Treasurer and IRS appointee under President Grover Cleveland. Murray Vandiver also was the Mayor of Havre de Grace.</font></p> <p align="left"><font face="Garamond"> The Vandivers had two children, Robert and Dorothy. In later years, Robert Vandiver also lived in the home with his family. Much of the family memorabilia remains in the home and is displayed for guests to read and view.</font></p> <h2 align="center"><font face="Garamond">Rustic Architecture</font></h2> <p align="left"><font face="Garamond"><img src="../images/backyard.jpg" alt="The Vandiver Inn's history makes it a perfect place for an outdoor wedding or event." align="right" border="3" width="300" height="202">The Vandiver Inn's backyard contains a unique summer house that hails from a period when landscape and architectural design tied closely to nature. The natural tree, in this case cedar, are used as supports, braces and brackets for the summer house. Few settings retain these rustic furnishings -- the one pictured above, behind the Vandiver Inn, is a rare and excellent example. </font></p> <p align="left"><font face="Garamond">12 cedar trunks rise to support a pyramidal roof with original branches used as railings, bracing and ornament.
