<td class="mainbar"><img src="downtown_deco.gif" alt="Downtown Deco" width="559" height="74" style="margin-bottom:15px;" /> <p>The common link to these three projects is how to reinterpret Art Deco, the popular international art design movement from 1925 until 1940, which continues to fascinate and allure us to this day. With its dashing sense of style, geometry and sensuous materials, Art Deco continues to be a choice language to convey a perennial and vital sense of urban flair.</p>

Doors are ebonized mahogany, with detail of trompe l'oeil silver gilded inlay. (2) Dining Room view. Ceiling and cove molding gilded in aluminum leaf, with warm gradation patina. Walls in chocolate hued Venetian plaster, waxed. </em></span></p>
<p><img src="project_1_3.jpg" alt="Project " width="277" height="369" align="left" style="margin:0 15px 0 0;">The first one, at the historic Palmolive Building—itself a Deco gem—finds us working on a restricted yet opulent palette, ranging from silver to chocolate hues. The idea was to give unity and character to the many rooms, while providing a suitable and plush background to the world-class contemporary art collection in view. For all ceiling surfaces, we developed a gilding finish utilizing aluminum leaf, laid out in perfect grid, and warmed up with a very soft overglaze; the glaze was blended in slight deepening gradation from the center of the ceiling towards the Deco-style shaped cove molding. In selected rooms we used beautiful and luscious techniques ranging from trompe l’oeil silver inlay to mother of pearl inspired procedures to accentuate specific items.</p>

<td valign="top"><p style="margin-right:15px;">The goal of the second project, just finished on East Lake Shore Drive, was to transform a guest room by using the very limited and highly contrasting colors of black and silver. Two large eglomise panels were commissioned as headboards, designed in a Chinoiserie-Deco fusion, using fretwork as the vehicle for constructing the image. Four smaller panels completed the installation, placed on closet doors directly across from the other two panels and finished in trompe l’oeil white tortoise shell. The effect of both groups of panels once they were installed was immediate and strikingly beautiful. The walls were finished in a gunmetal high gloss overglaze and the cove molding is entirely an illusion, being trompe l’oeil partially executed on the ceiling and the wall.</p></td>

<p>The third and last example is a blown up and altered version of an original Erte design, in which we recreated patterns in the clothing in minute detail, as well as a starburst of pearls in the background, all appropriately finished in pearlescent pigments.</p>

<p>With four years at the studio, <strong>Steve Seeley</strong> is one of our youngest artists, involved in all aspects of fine decorative painting. He has worked extensively on our new glass tile line, as well as the recent custom eglomise projects. He also enjoys venetian plaster techniques and other artistic approaches to fine finishes such as our porcelain and pearl techniques.</p>
<p>With a masters in printmaking from Ohio State University, Steve also continues his own personal work for galleries throughout the U.S. His work is focused on animals, themes of the north woods, and 1980’s nostalgia. He also enjoys antiquing, travel, and collecting Japanese toys and comics. </p>
<p>Steve is shown with a panoramic mural in progress in the studio that will be installed in the entrance of a Winnetka home.</p>

<td style="padding-top:3px;" valign="top"><p>Several times a year we collaborate with architects or designers for color consulting on residential or commercial projects. This may be simply choosing colors for rooms nearby that compliment our work done in a home, or creating a complete specification sheet for all surfaces with regards to color, sheen and details for an entire project.</p>
<p>One of our recent collaborations was with an architectural firm for the Giant Steps Training Center in Lisle for autistic children. One part of the job consisted of choosing an exact array of tones, following a subdued version of the color wheel, for the focal walls in the extensive hallways. We also chose all colors of related surfaces, such as carpeting, tiles and laminates for cabinets.</p></td>

There were some restrictions based on the children using the space.The lights would be kept dim, so color was important to designate areas for the children and add break up to the expanse, especially throughout the long corridors. Strong patterns were to be avoided, as they are too distracting, so materials were kept fairly simple and natural for the other surfaces. Sheens were designated to not have too much glare, yet allow for easy cleaning. This was a unique collaboration with the architect, as the 72,000 sq. ft. educational space required bold color choices to compliment the innovative architectural design.</p>
