Feature

How low can you go?

We are not talking about painting baseboards. We know that budgets are tight this year and the goal is how to apply a stunning finish to walls and surfaces in the least amount of steps possible using our artistry, quality materials and newest techniques.

You’ve heard painting myths before. “It took 14 coats of glaze to get this depth”. Whose walls need that many layers of paint accumulated at one time? We have not found a finish we can’t conquer in 5-6 steps, but even that is still on the high end. Many of our best surfaces average 3 steps. However drastic times call for drastic measures and it’s time to pull all the tricks out of our hats. We are aiming for 1-2 step processes that still look spectacular, a tall order. But, we are up for it and we have three for you:

Tailored Striea — yes it has been around the block before, but it’s a classic, and we have added a new twist, with more dimension, metallic highlights and reflection. ONE STEP over base coat.

Silk and Pearls — a soft raw silk effect with a fine pearl overglaze. Perfect in any area. TWO STEPS over base coat.

Charcoal Glaze — a dark pewter wash to be applied over a wood surface or floor respecting and highlighting the grain with subtle silver accents. This finish works equally well in a contemporary or traditional setting. TWO STEPS over sealed wood.

Paint is still one of the least expensive ways to make a significant change to a space. Play with color and these subtle techniques for a cozy effect to "wrap yourself up in", while you wrap up your design project this year.

New: Simes Eglomise Tiles!

Simes Studios is proud to announce its first collection of eglomise tiles, based on three woven textile patterns and rendered as trompe l'oeil behind glass. The Contemporary Eglomise Collection conveys the luxurious, versatile and practical features of both—textiles and glass—for use on focal walls, back splashes and more. The tiles are available through The Tile Gallery, 225 West Illinois, Chicago. See the entire collection at www.simeseglomise.com.

Reflections

A favorite recent project featured a panoramic mural painted in eglomise around two large mirrors in a master bath. This is one of many successful installations of our back-painted glass this past year. Each one was custom designed for a unique space; a focal wall in a powder room, behind a range, panels inside library cabinets, a tabletop, a private club, restaurant and more. To view a portfolio of our custom glass work available directly to architects and designers please visit our new website. This site also includes our DeGiulio Collection of seven exclusive designs for their outstanding kitchens and baths. See it all at www.simesstudios.com.

A General Idea

Although most of our paintings and murals are custom work that we develop together in collaboration with a designer or an architect, every now and then we get a commission for a reproduction of a classical painting. We always find these challenging and rewarding, as it puts our best painting skills to the test.

Recently we were commissioned to paint a French General, a family ancestor, five generations back. The original painting had been passed down in the family and was rich in history. Baron Albert had been a part of Napoleon’s army, was highly decorated and his name was carved in the Arc de Triomphe. His portrait had been painted by Albertus Jacob Franz Gregorius, a leading portrait painter from the School of David in Paris, who also painted Napoleon and Louis XVIII.

As the painting could only go to one family member, our client requested that we paint a copy for her own home. The painting was done in traditional fashion, in artist oils on linen with a solid wooden stretcher. The new owner and the studio are both proud of this faithful version.
