While working on ideas for a very special mural commissioned by a dear client for her second home in Coral Gables, our starting point included expressions of music, dance, art, colors, life and a reference to the rich symbology of Judaism, its holidays and iconography.
The work of Marc Chagall became the common denominator, and we knew the revered master’s spirit should be present in this group of six paintings.

Along the design process a thought was suggested and approved: to make these colorful images appear as if they were part of an ever-present whimsical world, seemingly existing on the other side of the wall, and made technically possible by one of our favorite optical devices, trompe l’oeil.

The weeks working on the canvases at the studio were joyous, faithfully replicating color, nuances of hue, drawing, proportions and brushwork of a selected collection of personages from various Chagall masterpieces and crafting them into a current and never before seen homage to the great artist.

Once finished, the precut canvases were varnished, rolled and sent to Coral Gables, where an expert installation team impeccably mounted them on the walls, looking time and again at the accomplished trompe l’oeil effect, as the imaginary “window depth” framing each composition was sufficiently realistic to trick a trained eye.

In the end, all of the six paintings were displayed exactly as designed, creating a burst of jeweled color in the large, contemporary Great Room.
