Dear Topical Group Member:
As incoming Chairman of the APS Topical Group on Shock Compression of
Condensed Matter (SCCM) I would like to thank the past officers of the
Topical Group, particularly Lalit Chhabildas, 1996 Chair, for their
service to the group. I have included the current list of the Topical
Group officers with this correspondence for your information.
There are several topics of importance that I would like to bring to
your attention.
* NEW APS OFFICERS
The following persons were elected to SCCM Topical Group offices in
1996: Neil C. Holmes (LLNL), Vice-Chair; Robert C. Cauble (LLNL),
Executive Committee-At-Large; and Dattatraya P. Dandekar (ARL),
Executive Committee-At-Large.
* CALL FOR 1997 FELLOWSHIP NOMINATIONS
Each year the APS calls for Fellowship nominations. Those members who
have contributed to the advancement of physics by independent,
original research or who have rendered some special service to the
cause of science or to the APS are eligible for election to APS
Fellowship. The SCCM Topical Group encourages the nomination of
individuals who have contributed to shock-compression science. The
deadline for 1997 APS Fellowship nominations is April 1, 1997. The
Nomination Form, Curriculum Vitae, and Supporting Letters are to be
submitted to:
Executive Officer
The American Physical Society
One Physics Ellipse
College Park, MD 20740-3844
ATTN: Fellowship Program
PLEASE INDICATE ON THE NOMINATION FORM THAT THE NOMINATION IS FOR THE
"SHOCK COMPRESSION TOPICAL GROUP." This will ensure that the APS gets
the nomination package to our own SCCM Fellowship Committee for
review. Nomination forms may be obtained by (1) writing to the above
address; (2) sending an email message to <[email protected]>, (3)
telephoning (505) 209-3268 or faxing (505) 209-0865; or (4)
downloading the electronic version of the nomination form from the APS
web site (http://www.aps.org).
* DEADLINE FOR ABSTRACTS FOR THE 1997 TOPICAL CONFERENCE
The 1997 Topical Conference on Shock Compression of Condensed Matter
will be held 27 July - 1 August at the University of Massachusetts,
Amherst, Mass. Abstracts for the 1997 Conference must be submitted
to the APS electronically. The deadline for submission of abstracts
is February 14, 1997, 5:00 p.m. at the APS Headquarters. For
information pertaining to electronic submission of abstracts please
contact Peter Bartkowski, email address <[email protected]> or Kathy L.
Anderson, email address <[email protected]>, tel. (410) 278-2079, fax
(410) 278-7293. This information can also be obtained directly from
APS by sending an email message to <[email protected]> and using the
word "info" (without quotes) in the text of your message.
* PLEASE REGISTER YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS WITH APS
This letter is being sent out by regular mail and by email. The cost
for a regular mailing is a few hundred dollars. The cost for email
is free to the Topical Group. It would be helpful to the Topical Group
if we could reduce the volume of our regular mailings and communicate
mainly by email. The APS Headquarters has been actively requesting
that you register your email address with the Society. The average
participation by all APS Members is 69%. The current participation
by members of the SCCM Topical Group is 61%, the lowest of all APS
Units. If you have not already done so, please provide the American
Physical Society with your current email address. This will help
reduce mailing costs and speed up communications.
If there is anything that I can do to help you or the Topical Group,
please contact me or any of the Topical Group officers listed on the
enclosed sheet. We also enlist your help in bringing in new members.
We are currently one of the smallest units in the APS and would like
to show modest growth in the next year. This would indicate broader
participation in the field, which in turn is related to the relative
health of the discipline of shock compression science. If you know
of someone who is an active researcher in the science of shock
compression, ask them to join the APS and to become an member of the
SCCM Topical Group. If they are already a member of the APS, but not
a member of the SCCM Topical Group, please ask them to establish their
affiliation with our group.
I look forward to seeing a large, enthusiastic attendance at the
Topical Group Conference in Amherst this summer, and to continued
success of the field of shock compression science within the physics
community.
Sincerely,
James N. Johnson, Chairman
APS Topical Group on Shock Compression of Condensed Matter
