<HTML> <HEAD> <TITLE>Minutes of 1997 Business Meeting</TITLE> </HEAD> <BODY BACKGROUND="carpet.gif" BGCOLOR="#FFFFFF"> <H2> Minutes of the Topical Group on Shock Compression of Condensed Matter Business and Executive Committee Meeting held on Thursday, 30 July 1997 </H2> <P> The meeting was called to order at 12:30 pm by Chair Jim Johnson. <P> About 17 people were in attendance. <P> The minutes of the 21 March 1996 Business and Executive Meeting were read and approved. <P> The financial report was given by Ray Lemar. The general fund had a balance of about $35.285 and the Shock Compression Award Fund had a balance of about $29,671. <P> The 1997 Topical Group Conference report was given by the Conference Chair Datta Dandekar. About 350 attendees were at the meeting. About $100,000 in registration fees had been collected. As requested by the Topical Group Treasurer Ray Lemar, the conference will probably lose about $10,000. Alita Roach and Bill Deal were thanked for their work on the conference. <P> A report on the 1998 APS March meeting in Los Angeles was given by Neil Holmes. There will be no focussed sessions. Topical Group members will be notified of the Topical Group's participation by email. <P> The 1999 Topical Group Conference report was given by Rob Hixson. The meeting will be held at Snowbird, Utah from 26 June to 2 July 1999. The contract has been signed. A Publications Chairman is being sought. <P> A report on student stipends for the meeting was given by Naresh Thadhani. Twenty-four students were each awarded a registration fee waiver and a stipend of $595 to attend the conference. One Russian student was not able to attend. <P> The Nomination Committee report was given by Rusty Gray. The nomination committee for the 1997 Topical Group election had been formed and a slate of candidates would be picked by September. <P> The Membership Committee report was given by Richard Dick. The Topical Group had 315 members. Another 75 had already applied for membership at the conference. <P> A report of the status of the Topical Group Ad Hoc Committee to identify long term shock compression and detonation science needs and to suggest methods to meet these needs was presented by Yogi Gupta. A report should be out soon. <P> It was announced that 3 new members were needed for the APS Shock Science Award Committee. <P> The meeting adjourned at 1:15 pm. </BODY></HTML>
