<p>
Dear Topical Group Members and Colleagues:
<p>
As current Chairman of the APS Topical Group on Shock Compression of
Condensed Matter (SCCM) there are several items of importance I would like
to bring to your attention.
<p>
<B>
DEADLINE FOR ABSTRACT SUBMISSION: 1998 MARCH MEETING
</B>
<p>
The 1998 APS March Meeting will be held March 16 - 20, 1998 in Los
Angeles, CA. The annual March Meeting has been the traditional off-year
meeting for the SCCM topical group. Abstracts for the 1998 March Meeting
must be submitted to the APS electronically. The deadline for submission
of abstracts is December 3, 1997, 5:00 p.m. at APS Headquarters.
Information pertaining to electronic submission of abstracts can be
obtained from the APS web site (<A
HREF="http://www.aps.org">http://www.aps.org</A>).  Please note that the
sorting category for shock compression abstracts is <B>16(g) - Materials
Research at High Pressure</B>. The annual (1998) business meeting for SCCM
topical group will take place at the March Meeting: time and location are
yet to be announced.

<B>
CALL FOR 1998 APS FELLOWSHIP NOMINATIONS
</B>
<p>
Each year the APS calls for Fellowship nominations. Those members who
have contributed to the advancement of physics by independent, original
research or who have rendered some special service to the cause of science
or to the APS are eligible for election to APS Fellowship. The SCCM
Topical Group encourages the nomination of individuals who have
contributed to shock-compression science. <B>The deadline for 1998 APS
Fellowship nominations is April 1, 1998.</B> The Nomination Form, Curriculum
Vitae, and Supporting Letters are to be submitted to:

<p>
        Executive Officer<BR>

        College Park, MD 20740-3844<BR>
        ATTN: Fellowship Program<BR>
<P>
PLEASE INDICATE ON THE NOMINATION FORM THAT THE NOMINATION IS FOR THE
"SHOCK COMPRESSION TOPICAL GROUP." This will ensure that the APS gets the
nomination package to our own SCCM Fellowship Committee for review.
Nomination forms may be obtained by (1) writing the above address; (2)
sending an email message to <A HREF="mailto:[email protected]">
[email protected]</A>, (3) telephoning (301)

1999 TOPICAL CONFERENCE ON SHOCK COMPRESSION OF CONDENSED MATTER
</B>
<P>
The 1999 Shock Conference will be held June 26 - July 2, 1999, at
Snowbird, Utah. Conference co-chairmen are Rob Hixson (Los Alamos
National Laboratory) and Lalit Chhabildas (Sandia National Laboratories).
More detailed information on the 1999 Shock Conference will appear on the
SCCM Topical Group web site (most easily accessed through
<A HREF="http://www.aps.org">http://www.aps.org</A>). Please note that sometime during 1998 there will be
a call for nominations for the <B>1999 Shock Compression Science Award</B>.
Please check the APS and SCCM web sites for details in the upcoming
months.

<B>
THANKS TO THOSE INVOLVED WITH THE 1997 TOPICAL CONFERENCE
</B>
<P>
We want to thank those who worked so hard to ensure a successful 1997
Topical Conference at Amherst, Massachusetts. In particular, Datta
Dandekar and Jerry Forbes, for overall handling of the Conference and the
technical program. We thank Steve Schmidt for producing the Conference
proceedings, and, as always, Alita Roach and Bill Deal for their keen
attention to logistics and details that makes everything run so smoothly.

<P>
Sincerely,

<P>
James N. Johnson, Chairman<BR>
APS Topical Group on Shock Compression of Condensed Matter<BR>
