Dear Topical Group Members:
<P>
We are already in the fourth quarter of 1998! As the year draws to a

Thanks are due to Rusty Gray and his nominating committee. Mike Boteler
has mailed out the ballots and bios. The returned ballots must be received
no later than 14 December 1998.
<P>
1999 Topical Conference on Shock Compression, Snowbird, Utah, 27 June-2
July 1999
<P>
Lalit Chhabildas, Rob Hixon, and their committee have done a great job of
organizing the conference, and the Call for Abstracts has been sent out.

1999 Shock Compression Science Award
<P>
Congratulations to Lynn M. Barker for receiving this award "in
recognition of his outstanding contributions to the temporal measurement and
interpretation of nonlinear physical processes in shock-compressed matter".
There will be a formal presentation during the Snowbird conference. The award
is also listed on the APS webpage at <A HREF="http://www.aps.org/praw/shock/descrip.html">http://www.aps.org/praw/shock/descrip.html</A>.
