Dear Topical Group Members:

As incoming Chair of the APS Topical Group on Shock Compression of
Condensed Matter (SCCMTG), I would like to first thank last year's
officers for their fine work, and for their help in getting us off to a
good start in 1998.

Next, I would like to discuss with you our 1998 program, and call your
attention to several upcoming events and associated deadlines.

BUSINESS MEETING DURING THE 1998 MARCH APS CONFERENCE
</B>
<P>
As Jim Johnson (1997 Chair) reminded us in his 3 October 1997 newsletter,
the meeting will be held in Los Angeles 16-20 March 1998.  We will hold an
SCCM business meeting at 11:00 AM on Wednesday 18 March in Room 519, and
all interested parties are invited to attend.

1998 APS FELLOWSHIP NOMINATIONS
</B>

The deadline is 1 April 1998.  The nomination form, curriculum vitae, and
supporting letters should be submitted to Executive Officer APS, One
Physics Ellipse, College Park, MD 20740-3844, Attn.  Fellowship Program. 
Please indicate that the nomination is for SCCMTG.  The forms may be

1999 TOPICAL CONFERENCE

Our 11th biennial conference will be held at Snowbird, Utah, 27
June-2 July 1999.  Conference co-chairs are Rob Hixson (Los Alamos) and
Lalit Chhabildas (Sandia).  Details can be found on the SCCM website
accessed through (<A HREF="http://www.aps.org">http://www.aps.org</A>).  
The first announcement will be mailed 1 March 1998; abstracts are 
due 15 December 1998.

1999 SHOCK COMPRESSION SCIENCE AWARD
