About Our Mission and Founding

Island Sailing Schools of Martha's Vineyard, Inc., was founded in 1997, to teach the sport and art of sailing as a way of enriching the lives of children, adults, families, and groups from various socio-economic backgrounds who live on or visit Martha's Vineyard.

Through sailing, we want to foster a sense of enjoyment, responsibility, sportsmanship, self-sufficiency, challenge, and teamwork in our students, as well as an appreciation, awareness, and understanding of nature's elements and our connectedness to the environment and to each other.

We are interested in both profit and not-for-profit activities, and participate in community and grant-funded projects to provide opportunities in sailing to those who are economically disadvantaged.

Our commitment is to a broad range of people: the children, teens, and adults of the communities of Martha's Vineyard; Island visitors and tourists; and special interest groups who want to use sailing as a way of increasing teamwork and leadership.

We are dedicated to excellence and believe in "safety first," so the boats we use, the expertise of our instructors, and the programs we develop are of the highest caliber. Island Sailing Schools is a member of the U.S. Sailing Association and upholds its standards for excellence.

Our Philosophy about Sailing

We believe that sailing is not just a sport or recreational activity, but also a metaphor about how to approach everyday life. Sailing is an opportunity for individuals and groups to develop character and strength--while having fun. It is a way to become more aware of the environment, ourselves, and others.

Learning to sail obviously includes learning the "techniques" of sailing (points of sail, tacking, jibing, etc.), but the art of sailing can also develop other skills, such as mental acuity, interpersonal communication, learning how to work with others as a team, learning how to be a leader and a follower, physical coordination, self-sufficiency, quick-wittedness, and, for some, overcoming fears. It provides an opportunity to develop focus and direction, to learn how to solve problems in a team-oriented approach that fosters harmony and respect. The chance to tackle problems on the water enhance a person's ability to tackle problems in everyday life off the water.

It is this broader philosophy of sailing that we embrace and to which we are committed.

Our goal is to bring the sport of sailing--the allegory and the essence, the dream and the reality--to as many people as possible...teaching safety, responsibility, sportsmanship.

About the Founders

Linda Conti
Linda Conti is a sailing enthusiast who has a strong commitment to helping youth and adults improve their lives. As one who learned to sail as an adult, she understands how this experience can give a person a sense of self-sufficiency, self-confidence, and a better ability to communicate and work with others in a team environment. Professionally, she has worked in the field of education for more than 15 years--as a financial manager, marketing, and fundraising professional in a psychology graduate school in San Francisco and in University continuing education settings. In these roles, she has designed, developed, and implemented community and professional education programs--including courses, workshops, conferences, and special institutes--for individuals and groups in a broad range of fields. Her appreciation of sailing, coupled with her strong sense of social service through education, are the motivating factors in cofounding Island Sailing Schools. She sees Island Sailing Schools as an opportunity to share the enjoyment of sailing with others and to foster the development of personal skills in teamwork, independence, and strength of character. She is especially interested in designing learning programs that combine the experience of sailing with the development of personal skills, and is committed to working with troubled youth, disadvantaged people, and special interest groups, such as teachers, mental health professionals, corporate teams, and business professionals.

Charles Morgan Shipway, IV
Charles Shipway has been sailing and racing since he was a young boy. He competed in several regattas regionally, nationally, and internationally. In 1992, he sailed in the Barcelona Olympics in the Tornado Catamaran class, representing the Territory of the U.S. Virgin Islands, where he visited and resided for over seven years. Among the numerous other races in which he has competed are the National Championships in Gulfport, Mississippi, the Miami Olympic Classics Regatta, the St. Petersburg O.C.R., the World Championships in Kingston, Ontario, and the Pre-Olympic Regatta as part of training for the 1996 Olympic trials in Savannah, Georgia. Now living on Martha's Vineyard year-round, he grew up in Connecticut and spent summers on the Vineyard teaching community sailing to children as well as offering private instruction to families and adults. During the summer, he runs the Menemsha Pond Races on Martha's Vineyard. He has led two community sailing programs, and a high school sailing team. He has formal and informal training in sailing and racing, and has been a U.S. Sailing Certified Instructor and member of the U.S. Sailing Association. He has a strong interest in sharing his Olympic experiences with others and in encouraging children and young adults to aspire to the Olympic dream.
