The Myanmar government has faced an international campaign by human rights
groups to block foreign investment. As official policy, the U.S. Government
neither encourages nor discourages trade with Myanmar. Since U.S. investment
sanctions were imposed in May 1997, the government has prohibited new
investment. Trade, services, and technology contracts are specifically
excluded from the investment ban. Asian nations have continued relations
with Myanmar, and granted full membership in ASEAN to Myanmar in 1997.</font></p>
