Conference Historians Report for Annual Conference 2010

Greetings in the name of our most blessed Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Thank you once again for this opportunity to serve in His precious and holy name. I always hope that what I report might be of some interest to you, while bringing God glory in the effort.

The major news of this past year was the combining of the Maryland-Virginia Conference with the New York Conference, thus forming a new corporation known as the Mid-Atlantic Region. As it turned out, this event occurred in what would have been the 70th year of the Maryland-Virginia Conference being established as a separate entity from the New York Conference, of which it had been a part in its inception. So, I guess this could be called a re-combining.

With the joining of the conferences in 2009, any sort of celebration of the Maryland-Virginia Conferences 70th Anniversary seemed out of the question, but as it turned out, God had a present for us. The gift was the revelation of a collection of precious historical documents that record events from as far back as 1939 - the very first year of conference existence!!! After having been tucked away in an old wooden trunk, the written collection was brought to light in what one could only refer to as an anniversary surprise from God! His timing is perfect! Plus, its one of those gifts that keeps on giving. The more you read, the more you learn. It is now all safely among the Alston Memorial Camp Museum collection, and I look forward to turning each and every page.

Among the discoveries in the obscurity of the newly-named Phillips Retreat House attic were original, hand-written minutes of the First Session of the Maryland-Virginia Conference Womens Missionary Society, dated September 28, 1939. This book of minutes, bearing names of precious saints and loved ones, contains records of Conference WMS activities from the 1939 beginning through July 11, 1964. Other records of note are Conference Board of Evangelism Minutes from 1950 1958, and the organizational minutes of the Etlan (Virginia) Free Methodist Church, dated May 21, 1963. According to the record, this new church began with 30 members, 20 preparatory members, and one junior member. I remember the excitement surrounding its establishment being buzzed about in camp that summer. However, today it no longer exists. I do not know what happened. As I recall, it was first pastored by a lay person, Tommy Bane, who answered a personal call to mission from the Forestville (New Vision) fellowship. Permanent pastors followed. Maybe something more will turn up.

A gift of an old pictograph entitled J. Hudson Taylor Apostle to Inland China was presented anonymously to the Camp Museum along with some historic frames and a photograph of a beautiful woman. Can anyone tell me the identity of the woman in the photo, circa late 1800s? (Was she a Taylor?) A little side story about the Taylor Family was passed down from my mother. When she was a child, missionary families on furlough were entertained in church members homes. One time in the 1920s, the J. Hudson Taylor, II, family stayed in my grandparents home in Washington, D. C., around Christmas. J. Hudson Taylor, III, was a little boy at that time. He and his sister had been raised in China and were not at all familiar with electric lights or water faucets. They playfully enjoyed running up and down the steps in the home, switching lights and turning water faucets on and off, much to the delight of my mother, who was also a little child. They also enjoyed making paths with their fingers in the soap flake snow my grandmother had on the table beneath her Christmas tree. Isnt it fun to know some of the personal side of church icons and saints? On a somber note, I read recently that J. Hudson Taylor, III, passed on to heaven this year. His great-grandfather had been the first missionary to penetrate deep into mainland China for Christ, and was the founder of the China Inland Mission. After China was closed and missionaries were expelled so many years ago, it was gratifying to learn later when it was opened up again in our lifetime that many Chinese Christians had kept their faith and house churches quietly survived. Praise God! And thanks to a generous donor, we now have a lovely old pictograph in our humble Camp Museum to tell this mission story. An article in the summer issue of the Free Methodist historical Society Newsletter by Howard Snyder chronicles Why James Hudson Taylor Became Free Methodist. Its an inspiring read, plus I learned that James II and his wife Alice graduated from George Washington University in DC, and pastored Culpeper (Virginia) FM Church while awaiting missionary appointment to China. This tidbit just fascinated me! They must have affiliated with the Washington Free Methodist Church while students. It helped clarify to me why they may have been staying with my grandparents while on furlough some years later.

Just a piece of business, I am updating our annual Conference membership in the Free Methodist Historical Society. Its $100. Id rather do that then pay as an individual. This helps the Society and gives credit to the Conference as participating.

May you enjoy a season of refreshment and a sense of renewed urgency and divine inspiration as you work to fulfill Gods dream for you, your family, and your church.

Happy in His Service,

Marti Theune, Maryland-Virginia and New York Conference Historian
