Pushkin
School: Passing Down the Russian
Heritage and Poetry to Children in
Novomoskovsk

It would be difficult to imagine low
income American school children voluntarily
participating in rigorous extracurricular
classes devoted entirely to the study
of American literary greats like Mark
Twain or Walt Whitman. In Novomoskovsk,
Russia, however, there is an extraordinary
school where many youngsters immerse
themselves in the works of Russia's
most beloved poet, Aleksandr Sergeevich
Pushkin.

Since
its inception in 1996, the school has
collaborated with the Russian State
Library, various museums, as well as
the country's top Pushkin scholars. Noted
for its pedagogical practices, the
school has published its curriculum
to share teaching methods with other
teachers in Russia. Many of the
students have successfully participated
in national and international "Pushkin" conferences
and contests, displaying their depth
of knowledge. And a number of
Pushkin School graduates have gone
on to study in the top humanities departments
at prestigious colleges, including
Moscow State and St. Petersburg State
Universities.

Such
success does not come easily when the
only source of income is a state subsidy
for teacher salaries. The students
come from families struggling financially
and some are orphans. RCWS grants
have therefore been critical to the
flowering of this academic and cultural
undertaking. Our grants have
underwritten the vast majority of the
school library's 3,000 holdings. The
Society's continued support in 2007
will supply the school with necessary
books and magazine subscriptions, underwrite
student travel to contests, and help
meet printing and publishing expenses.

The
school's director, Natalia Borodina,
is rightfully proud of the achievements
of the students and staff. Each
year, approximately 400 students from
6 to 17 years of age gain a deeper acquaintance
with the beauties of Russian language
and culture through the study of Pushkin. We
wish the school continued success!
