<h1 id="pagetitle">Pushkinogorodsky Orphanage</h1><br/>

<p><img src="/projects/images/opochka3.jpg" alt="pushkinogorodsky_orphanage" name="pushkinogorodsky" width="241" height="266" border="0" align="left">The Pushkinogorod Orphanage is located in the middle of a pine forest, far from major city centers and about 160 km from Pskov. The Pushkinogorod Orphanage is the only institution in the entire Pskov region that offers prevention, treatment and rehabilitation programs for children who have been exposed to tuberculosis. Over 200 children between the ages of 7 and 18 benefit from medical programs at the orphanage. Most of these children come from <nobr>low-income</nobr> families and over 30 children are orphans. An overwhelming majority of the children have at least one parent who abuses alcohol and/or is unemployed. 10% of the children come from families with a disabled parent. Over the course of a year, about 175 children reside permanently at the orphanage.</p>
<p>One of the challenges that the orphanage faced was the lack of separate and appropriately equipped space for newly arriving children. When homeless children are brought from the streets to the Pushkinogorod Orphanage, <img src="/projects/images/opochka4.jpg" alt="pushkinogorodsky_orphanage" name="pushkinogorodsky" width="252" height="193" border="0" align="right">it is in their best interest initially to live separately from the other children. Because of <nobr>health-related</nobr> concerns — and those related to general adjustment — these children need a transitional home or a «social hostel» to get used to their new life. With that in mind, the administration of the orphanage allocated a private space for 30 new children. This social hostel enabled new children to undergo a thorough medical examination without putting the other children at risk. Children at the social hostel are able to receive care and support tailored to their individual needs in developing healthy habits and basic <nobr>self-care</nobr> skills.</p>
<p>The administration of the orphanage applied for an $8,000 grant to outfit the social hostel facilities. The hostel includes a social rehabilitation room, a kitchen, two dens, 4 bathrooms and showers, a laundry room and several bedrooms. After completing treatments and rehabilitation programs at the social hostel, children will be able to join the rest of the children at the orphanage for subsequent placement with the foster families.</p>
<p>Tatiana Bodrova, RCWS Pskov representative, listed this case among the six most vital projects that need RCWS’s support in 2009.</p>
