<h1 id="pagetitle">Rehabilitation Center "Preodolenie L"</h1><br/>

<p><img src="images/preodolenie3.jpg" alt="preodolenie" name="preodolenie" width="301" height="229" border="0" align="left">Founded in 1992, this rehabilitation center provides training, education, and physical therapy to 190 disabled children from orphanages, low income families and families with many children. The Center prepares disabled children to be fully active members of society. Students acquire a variety of skills through classes in computers, carpentry, weaving, sewing, art, beading, choreography, wood painting, costume design, hair styling, floriculture, English language, and horse riding. The Center also organizes exhibitions and games; it also distributes presents to sick children. For the last six years, the Center has helped RCWS to organize the New Year’s event for orphans and disabled children in Moscow. The Center has been cited by the Russian Government as one of the best facilities that promotes social education.</p>
<p>In 2004 the center opened its first horse therapy program for children with disabilities. Over 120 children have benefited from the equine therapy since then. The employees of the center observed that when children come to the center, they exhibit severe exhaustion from medical treatments and endless doctor’s visits. Within days of the equine therapy children start experiencing emotional comfort from interacting with horses. While riding horses, children feel a unique spirit of freedom and relaxation — free from wheelchairs or crutches; children improve their balance, tone their muscles, enhance blood circulation, boost their metabolism, and stimulate thought <img src="images/preodolenie1.jpg" alt="horses" name="horses" width="222" height="244" border="0" align="right">processes.</p>
<p>Among the success stories of the center is the remarkable improvement of Kolya Bolyan, who has been diagnosed with autism. After 4 years of horse therapy (1–2 times a week), Kolya was accepted to a public school and now speaks two languages.</p>
<p>Another beneficiary of the horse therapy program is Maksim Nikiforov, age 6, who had been diagnosed with cerebral palsy. After two years of horse therapy, Maksim has learned to sit, support his head, speak and walk with the help of his mother. He currently attends <nobr>pre-school</nobr> and is getting ready to apply to elementary school this year.</p>
<p>Artem Ivanov is the head of the equine program. He spent his first 16 years of life in a wheelchair. In 1995 he was introduced to horse therapy, and within 3 months he had begun walking on crunches. Artem currently attends a doctoral program at the Moscow Humanitarian University and is writing his thesis on the equine therapy for people with disabilities. In 2004, Artem approached «Preodolenie L» to open a horse therapy program.</p>
<p>To continue implementation of the program, the Center is applying for a $7,000 grant to take care of their three horses and to cover some of the payroll expenses.</p>

<p class="column">RCWS had granted <strong>$2,700</strong> to the Center in 2000, <strong>$3,600</strong> grant in 2002, <strong>$4,000</strong> in 2003, <strong>$10,000</strong> in 2004, <strong>$6,000</strong> in 2006, <strong>$10,582</strong> in 2007.<br/>The financial reports have been submitted.</p>
