<h1 id="pagetitle">Opochka Specialized Orphanage</h1><br/><br/>

<p><img src="images/opochka_sport.jpg" alt="sport_children" name="opochka" width="293" height="225" border="0" align="left">The Opochka Specialized Orphanage houses 102 children with minor disabilities between the ages of 7 and 17. All children reside and study at the orphanage.</p>
<p>Thanks to the RCWS’s support, Opochka children’s living conditions have improved significantly over the years. Not only do children enjoy their more comfortable rooms, renovated bathrooms and the outside playground, but they also learn computer skills, sewing and carpentry. The care for these special children has been greatly improved thanks to the renovated medical center, refurbished social rehabilitation center and upgraded laundry facilities.</p>
<p>With all the positive things happening at the orphanage, there is one problem that remains unsolved. Its building is in extremely <nobr>run-down</nobr> condition. It was constructed in 1938 and there have been no capital improvements since then. The wooden structure<img src="images/opochka2.jpg" alt="opochka_windows" name="opochka" width="266" height="214" border="0" align="right"> of the building had rotted in some places, damaging certain floor and ceiling areas; underground water is causing the building’s foundation to crumble.</p>
<p>Although the orphanage’s building is in poor condition, local authorities are not planning to close it for major renovations. In fact, the orphanage has been chosen for a regional experimental educational program for children with special needs. The goal of this innovative program is to create an environment and a study curriculum which would allow healthy and special needs children to work together.</p>
<p>Last year the orphanage received a $35,000 donation from Verner Peter Schmidt Foundation for cosmetic renovation of the facade of the building. The orphanage sought additional funds to replace 23 windows in 13 children’s bedrooms while the renovation of the building is taking place. The windows were half rotten and most of them were broken. In the cold season, the windows let the warm air escape. With a $10,372 grant from RCWS, the orphanage was able to install new windows while the facade was being renovated. New windows enhanced the living conditions and ventilation of the premises, and as a result, the general health of children residing at the orphanage improved.</p>

<p class="column">RCWS had supported Opochka Specialized Orphanage with the following grants in the past:<br/><strong> $2,352</strong> in 2001, <strong>$8,000</strong> in 2002, <strong>$10,070</strong> in 2003, <strong>$12,179</strong> in 2004, <strong>$13,146</strong> in 2006, and <strong>$24,625</strong> in 2007.<br/> All reports have been submitted.</p>
