<p class="greycopy">Having grown up in Russia, Nadia Kuprian strongly sympathizes with RCWS’s goals and feels personally obliged to take an active and vested interest in helping the charity support orphaned Russian children. She has sporadically taken part in various philanthropic endeavors but sees an exigent need to help RCWS, which is why she is making a commitment to run the <strong>ING New York City Marathon</strong>. Nadia is a Research Director at Synovate, a global market research company that generates consumer insights, provides clients with cohesive global support and marketing solutions, and whose operations span across 62 countries. She is an avid runner and is looking forward to making her first marathon run meaningful by collaborating with RCWS.</p></td>

<p><strong>Why did you choose RCWS?</strong><br/>
As soon as I heard about RCWS I thought it was a perfect match for me. Seeing as I currently live in the US but am Russian, the ING New York City Marathon provides an unparalleled opportunity to partake in a noteworthy and exciting event while also helping Russian children from across the ocean.</p>
<p><strong>Tell us something about your motivation/personal story and the goal you want to achieve by running for RCWS?</strong><br/>
I am not an athlete and I don’t think I will impress anyone with my results. I’m training as much as I can and am motivated to do well. My goal is not to outrun the others because, in all honesty, the marathon is a gathering place for some of the world’s top runners and I am a running enthusiast. I am simply honored to be a part of it because my completion of the marathon will mark an important personal accomplishment in my life. Every mile that I run will not only signify a feat in personal strength but also lead me closer to the gift of being able to directly impact the lives of Russian children. Sports are not necessarily about competition, rather, they are about <nobr>self-improvement</nobr>, character development and <nobr>will-power</nobr>. This is why sports equipment for Russian orphanages shouldn’t be thought of as just a recreational luxury — it’s essential. Achieving seemingly insurmountable physical goals can help children realize that anything else they might wish to achieve is surprisingly within their reach with enough effort.</p>

<td><p><strong>What role does running play in your life?</strong><br/>
I think of participating in the marathon as a quantum leap in my life. A marathon is not only a test of exceptional endurance but also a physical, emotional, and intellectual battleground requiring an immense amount of discipline. I am interested in testing my limits and hope to become a stronger person by participating.</p>
<p>In addition to all of this, I simply enjoy running! I am always excited before I go for a run and am happy and invigorated after I have finished. Living close to Prospect Park in Brooklyn played an important role in my transition from «running to stay in shape» to «running for happiness».</p>
<p>This is the first time I will be participating in a marathon- my first official race ever!</p>

<p><strong>Why is it important to help disadvantaged children in Russia?</strong><br/>
Russia is a wonderful country and people have very warm hearts there. However, the Russian mentality surrounding philanthropy is very underdeveloped. Russians are highly cynical with regards to any institutions/organizations given Russia’s oppressive history. Even charitable organizations evoke a lot of doubt because people assume that the donated money will not go where it is most needed. I have witnessed firsthand that this is a commonly held belief in Russia which creates a huge impediment for the advancement of any charitable causes. Consequently, there are so many children in need and neglected, rundown orphanages.</p>
<p>I don’t have these prejudices against charities — people who devote their lives to philanthropy should be admired and appreciated. I was fortunate to have recently learned about RCWS and their passion for helping Russian children. I trust them and know that the funds raised will go to good use.</p>
