The Kiamsha Youth Empowerment Organization is sponsored by the Community Services Coalition of Prince George's County Maryland. Kiamsha was designed to provide young African-Americans with empowerment skills and to enrich their minds with positive aspects of the present and future to prevent self destruction. Kiamsha is Swahili for "that which awakens me."
The first Kiamsha Youth Empowerment Conference was held at the University of Maryland Conference Center in College Park, Maryland. It was a three-day conference co-sponsored by the Prince George's County Department of Family Services-Office of Community Collaborations and partnerships; the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP), the Federal agency mandated to lead the nation's alcohol and other drug prevention efforts; and its birthplace, Hunter Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church located in Suitland, Maryland.
The theme of the 1992 conference was "We Have Better Things to Do Than Drugs". The primary objective of the conference was to provide knowledge about effective alcohol drug prevention and early intervention strategies that reduce risk factors among African-American youth. Over two-hundred Prince George's County youth attended the conference and participated in workshops presented by previously trained youth. The workshops focused on topics such as Alcohol and Other Drug Use; Spirituality; Awareness of Self; Leadership Skills; Sociological and Economic Perspectives of Society and the Individual; and the Transition from Adolescence to Adulthood (The Rites of Passage). The conference was regarded as such a success that specific sessions were replicated at CSAP's National Prevention Conference which had over 400 youth participants from across the country.
The Kiamsha youth invited a group of Latino youth to observe and participate in the 1995 conference to encourage this group to start an organization of their own. In October, 1996 Alborado Latino was formed as a result of the Kiamsha youths efforts to reach out to other ethnic groups. The 1996 Kiamsha conference theme was "Yearn to Learn - Leave to Achieve." Workshops conducted at this conference were also presented to youth from across the country traveling with the legendary Mrs. Rosa Parks, "Modern Day Mother of the Civil Rights Movement" during the annual Metropolitan to Freedom tour at Howard University in Washington, DC.
The 1997 Kiamsha conference was held on the campus of Bowie State University and the theme was "Reflect and Project." The Kiamsha youth invited multicultural youth from all the high schools in the county to participate in workshops entitled "Abstinence from Sex, Drugs and Violence" and "Diversity". The 1998 conference will be held on March 12 - 13, 1998, at the Inn and Conference Center, University of Maryland University College (UMUC), in College Park Maryland. The conference theme is "We Are One." Together we can build a better tomorrow.
The Kiamsha Youth Empowerment Steering Committee is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating the annual conference and other substance abuse and violence prevention activities that focus on youth.
