p�nible! En particulier lorsqu�on essaie d�apprendre � l��ge

And I, wanting to show that I knew French cheeses, said, "Je
voudrais le fromage a cheval" ( I thought I was saying, "I would
like the goat cheese ("de ch�vre"), but I made a mistake -- and what
I actually said was "I would like the cheese on horseback" (�
cheval)</span></p>

The waiter stared at me. "The cheese on horseback?" he repeated.</span></p>

"Yes," I said. And then, trying to practice my French and be
'conversational', I added. "Yes, one doesn't see a cheese on

I gathered up my dignity and started to protest that I had ordered 'fromage

"But did you ever receive it?" he asked me. Then he handed me the
menu again. "Here are the cheeses we offer"</span></p>

Well, needless to say, "fromage � cheval" was not on the list. I
realized that, once again, I was at the start of many more
linguistic humiliations... I will have to write about them to cope..</span></p>
