He grew up in poverty, in a household with his mother Ruha and his younger sister Nela. Ruha worked as a servant for a succession of private homes and inns, and spent most of her free time with a succession of disreputable characters. (His father must have been one of these; he remembers nothing of him.) Most of these were not very fond of the children, who thus depended greatly on each other. A few of them were more kindly and helped develop Clyde's street smarts. <p>When Clyde was 14, he got into a fight with a particularly vile boyfriend of his mother's, and ran away from home. He lived with friends or on the streets for about a year, before a wily old rogue named Rujan took him under his wing, finding him a room to rent and teaching him survival skills. He snuck back to visit Nela whenever possible. Three years passed. <p>One day he showed up at Rujan's, only to find the old man deep in conversation with two shadowy strangers. He waited outside till he heard the sounds of struggle; when he burst in, Rujan was dead, and the two men were gone. <p>His friends advised him to skip town for awhile, and he came to Lark Hollow, suitably distant from Talen. (He adopted his surname at this time� it sounds noble without being really identifiable.) <p>However, once his skills and experience are higher, he plans to return to Talen to 1) track down Rujan's killers; and 2) provide a better life for Nela. </body> </html>
