<h3>What didn’t fit in the book</h3>

I blogged about the various books I was reading <a href="https://zompist.wordpress.com/category/india/">here</a>; often I wrote more than ended up in the book.

<p>Some of my favorites:

<ul>
<li><a href="https://zompist.wordpress.com/2017/09/09/the-ocean-of-story/">The Ocean of Story</a>
<li><a href="https://zompist.wordpress.com/2017/08/15/maximum-city/">Maximum City</a>
<li><A href="https://zompist.wordpress.com/2017/07/03/india-transformed/>More in the “Indian-Americans Gawking at Modern India” genre</a>
<li><a href="https://zompist.wordpress.com/2017/06/23/tales-of-the-ten-princes/">The Ten Princes</a>
<li><a href="https://zompist.wordpress.com/2017/01/21/the-hitopadesa/">The Hitopadeśa </a>
<li><a href="https://zompist.wordpress.com/2017/01/04/the-raj-dodge/">The Raj dodge: Jon Wilson explains why colonialism really was bad </a>
<li><a href="https://zompist.wordpress.com/2016/09/21/the-baburnama/">The Baburnama</a>
<li><a href="https://zompist.wordpress.com/2016/09/14/kalidasa/"> Kālidāsa</a>
<li><a href="https://zompist.wordpress.com/2016/09/14/why-you-need-my-book-saris/">How video games get saris wrong</a>
<li><a href="https://zompist.wordpress.com/2016/05/02/the-dream-of-the-monk/">The dream of the monk</a>
<li><a href="https://zompist.wordpress.com/2016/03/13/ramayana/">The Rāmāyaṇa</a>

</ul>

<h3>Maps</h3>

<a href="indiamaps.html">Here's a bunch of maps</a>, especially for Kindle users.

<h3>What do I read next?</h3>

The five best non-primary books from my research:

<ul>
<li>Wendy Doniger’s <i>The Hindus: An Alternative History</i>
<li>A.L. Basham’s <i>The Wonder That Was India</i>
<li>Suketu Mehta’s <i>Maximum City</i>
<li>William Dalrymple’s <i>Delhi: City of Jinns</i>
<li>John Keay’s <i>India: A History</i>
</ul>

As for primary sources— go crazy, anything in the bibliography is good. People can be scared of the classics, especially non-Western ones; don’t be, they’re almost always more accessible than the academics writing about them. My book will give you enough background to understand enough of the historical and religious references.

<p>If you read a lot about Indian religions, I urge you to balance them with the folk stories, so you don’t get the impression that India is nothing but spirituality and asceticism.

<p>Many of the classics are <i>long long long</i>, but all exist in excellent abridgements.

<h3>Pretty pictures</h3>

<ul>

<li><a href="https://www.harappa.com/slideshows/mohenjo-daro">Mohenjo-Daro (Harappan city)</a>

<li><a href="https://www.savista.com/room/abhaneri-day-trip/">Stepwell at Abhaneri</a>

<li><a href="http://amazingindiablog.in/humayuns-tomb-delhi">Tomb of Humāyun</a>

<li><a href="http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/243/gallery/">Cave temple at Ellorā</a>

<li><a href="http://www.culturalindia.net/monuments/char-minar.html">The Chārminār in Hyderabad</a>

<li><a href="http://www.culturalindia.net/monuments/sanchi-stupa.html">The stūpa at Sānchī</a>

<li><a href="https://theculturetrip.com/asia/india/articles/red-fort-a-walk-through-history/">Red Fort in Delhi</a>

</ul>

<h3>Great resources</h3>

<ul>

<li>I’ve made great use of <a href="http://spokensanskrit.org">this Sanskrit on-line dictionary</a> and <a href="http://hindi-english.org">this Hindī one</a>.

<li>Here’s a modern translation of <a href="http://www.academia.edu/5853266/Hitopadesa">the Hitopadeśa</a>.

<li>Here's a good resource on <a href="http://www.southasia.sas.upenn.edu/tamil/grammar/tamilgrammar1.html">Tamil</a>.

<li>Whitney’s grammar of Sanskrit is <a href="https://archive.org/details/sanskritgrammari00whituoft">available here</a>.

<li>An <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ze0Ed0IHlEc">example of the Bhairava rāga</a> described in the book.

<li>Video on <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtStNXr4wNo">how to wear a sari</a>.

<li><a href="https://www.indianweddingsaree.com/">This commercial site</a> is a great place to browse gorgeous saris, salwar kamiz, kurtas, and more.

</ul>

<h3>Errata</h3>

<ul>
<li>If I knew of any now, I’d be correcting them in the draft!
