<p>Round dates are intended to imply vagueness. I've tried to be conservative, avoiding questionable claims. Undoubtedly the "real" date for many techniques is earlier; the date given here may simply be when the technique was common enough to be preserved in our spotty archeological record.
<p>Almost all technologies proceed in small steps; I've included these in some instances, but for each entry here you should imagine half a dozen more.
