Parliament

You decide to stop by Parliament. Perhaps some of the members or their staff have something to tell you about Ormant, or Kumari.

It takes you awhile to realize that Parliament was abolished— well, it turns out to be a hundred and twenty years ago. You’re a little bit further behind on your current affairs than you thought. Outsystem diplomacy is more your forte, really.

Parliament was something of a formality for the last millennium or so anyway. Major policy decisions are made by the people as a whole, consulted photonically; the laws themselves are much too complex for politicians to be allowed to touch anyway, and are worked out by AIs.

The legislative chambers have been kept as a museum, where debates, fights, and filibusters are enacted by actors for the benefit of tourists and schoolchildren. There are also busts of outstanding legislators, plaques commemorating their most egregious amendments, samples of their publicity holofilms, graphs of their salaries and junkets, lists of criminal convictions, and other high points in the history of the Martian parliament.
