2958 — The death of Caleon

Eretald

Ctesifon (or Žésifo, as it is now pronounced) rebelled against the Curiyans in 2917; the leader of the rebellion, the marquis Bura, proclaimed himself Emperor. His reconstituted Empire consisted of no more than modern Ctésifon and Solhai. A southern campaign a few years later added Beluana and Zariaspa. Irvesi and Célenor swore a purely nominal fealty.

The Verdurians sent congratulations and gifts. This satisfied Bura, but not his son Ertala, who succeeded to the throne in 2941. He sent messages to Caleon, the lord (sanno) of Verduria, asking that he come to Ctesifon, proper tribute in hand, to swear fealty to the Empire. Caleon did come— after subduing the Western Wild, whose bandits and lordlings had been harrassing his kingdom— but Ertala’s arrogance so outraged him that he left, and proclaimed himself the sovereign King (dalu) of Verduria (2943).

Ertala ordered his generals to suppress this treason. They refused, complaining of the smallness of the army. He had them executed; but he also began to build up a new army. Caleon waited to act till it began marching north (2950). It took no more than six months to utterly destroy Ertala’s army. He then marched into Ctesifon, proclaiming his intention to have Ertala thrashed like a schoolboy. The last Caďinorian Emperor took his own life rather than suffer this indignity.

Later campaigns secured Irvesi, Aodo, and Célenor for Verduria; when the Curiyans raided Zariaspa, Caleon invaded their kingdom and put Kulža to the torch. He was urged to name himself Emperor, but he refused— not out of humility, for he was reputed to have none, but out of pride in his great city— “a new empire, and not a resuscitation of an old,” as he said. He was assassinated in 2958 by agents of the defeated Marquis of Irvesi.

The Makši were thrust out of Eretald by about 2900. Besides Verduria, the most powerful states in Eretald are new states on the front lines against the barbarians, organized by the victorious warlords: Barakhún, Bešbalic (whose name derives from that of a long-forgotten Naviu tribe), Svetla, and Vimínia. Deštai represents a successful rebellion against the humbled Curiyans (2955).

The people of Érenat, fortified by their new religious doctrine, rose against the Kebreni, and by now have succeeded in pushing them almost out of the country.Terrestrial and Almean humans, despite their similarities, are not interfertile; the marriages of the Elenicoi and the locals were barren. Many of them adopted children, however, and many Avélans claim descent from these adoptive Elenicoi. (They can be identified by Nëron- in their family names.) The Greek language, however, died out, except for scholarship.

Elsewhere

Dhekhnam, pursuing its imaginary quarrel with the Sarnáeans, occupied another chunk of Sarnáe (including its capital, Iďanieȟa) in 2910. Mitigaoma and Iosoandor pitied their cousins, but obviously there was nothing they could do about it; indeed, they increased their trade with Dhekhnam, in hopes that they would be more valuable to it as trading partners than as potential subjects.

The north of Čeiy has for years nurtured many grievances against the south: the economic supremacy of Ṭetäs, its domination of the military, the excessive influence of Bezuxau. In 2940 the conflict escalated into full-scale civil war. The early years of the war went against the north, and more than once it seemed that the southerners would triumph. With the help of the Uṭandal of Luṭay, however, the northerners have imposed a blockade on the south, and are now slowly starving it into submission.

The free Tžuro captured the city of Dusilim, forming the kingdom of Dusila, in 2905; easily supplied by sea, the city withstood Sainor attempts at reconquest. In alliance with Šurantal and Baburali, Ičili was liberated in 2940. From these new bases the Tžuro raid Sainor territory, and suffer Sainor counter-raids.
