2220 — The day of the Sainor

Barbarian invasions always have a prehistory— generally, one of overcrowding, oppression by neighboring tribes, and the honing of fighting techniques on one another, culminating in a unity achieved by force or by concord, and an agreement to cooperate in seeking fortune together. The fortune of a nearby agricultural state is usually considered a good choice.

Thus it was with the Sainor, who had been shoved out of the Xazen plain by the aggressive Coruo. They poured into Xengiman, overrunning Bolon (2181) and Bukaneli (2186) in short order. They took the time to push back the Coruo on their western front, then, after softening up the lawless middle Xengi with raids, they invaded it in force in 2198.

None of this provoked any concerted resistance from the other Axunaic states. Niormen, for instance, breathed a sigh of relief when the Sainor poured into Rajjay rather than into their own territory. And both Gurdago and Čeiy took advantage of the turmoil to extend their empires at the expense of the Axunemi. Weinexi called itself Axunai after 2200, on the occasion of its reduction of a few minor enemies.

The Tokruji, pushed out of their own homelands north of Lake Lenan by the Carhinnoi, have in recompense begun to make other people miserable— so far, mainly Tžuro. There is a reason for this: Jippirasti lays great stress on the unity of the believers, which has meant that one people after another has taken it as a sacred duty to conquer their neighbors to reclaim them for Jippir.

The Tokruji attacks only dented the dignity of the Kurundasti Tej, but the rout of the Axunemi caused a depression that greatly weakened the state. The fighting in the north and their taxes and mobilizations also alientated the southern and eastern reaches, which split off from the Kurundasti around the turn of the century. By this time tej marks only a claim to full sovereignty— the Namal, for instance, still acknowledged the spiritual authority of the Kurundasti.

The Red Cabal of Caďinas retook Araunicoros in 2170; but after this almost all news was bad. A rebellion was barely suppressed along the Eärdur (2195) when the wizard Uhnonca took control of the important northern city of Verduria (2198). It took three years to put him down; and then there was trouble in Seraeor. When the people of Ctesifon revolted, naming the noble Irun of Banda (the general who had suppressed Uhnonca) as their new Emperor, the army of the south pledged its support. The Cabal ran to and fro, but no sooner had they entered one province when one they’d left rebelled. By 2220 Irun had established his authority over the whole realm.

During the civil wars the Coruo expanded their toehold in Eretald, and spilled into Sarnáe. Control over the ktuvoks was also lost.

The Somoyi kingdom of Metauro expanded to the Lernukh, where a few tribes had settled to work the lands watered by the river. The people of Metauro were half herdsmen themselves, and tied to the pure nomads by blood, trade, and tradition, so they foresaw no trouble.
