1750 C — Cities and Literacy

The literate area has greatly expanded since the last Cities and Literacy map, thanks to the Caďinorians and the Tžuro.

One new script has been devised since the last map— the Jippirasti alphabet. Strictly speaking there is not a letter for each sound, but a stroke; rules allow the strokes to be combined into a unique but decomposable glyph for each word.
For instance,
 p
could be expanded to
 pa, thence
 pra or
 pan,
and even to
 sprand.

The Tžuro attribute the script to Jippir (God) himself, who taught it directly to Babur. Unbelievers suggest that Babur adopted the idea of the Skourene syllabary, which also contains both alphabetic and syllabic elements.

The strongest urban cultures are those of Caďinas and Čeiy. The Cuzeians had seen the usefulness of cities, but had never managed to integrate them into their rigid system of noble Houses; the Axunašin saw them as no more than seats of power and playgrounds for the lords. Now that Axunai has come to dark days, the cities are little more than slums, the people remaining only because they have nowhere better to go. The Caďinorians and Čeiyu by contrast appreciated the ability of cities to generate wealth, not only within their walls but in the country as a whole.

The triad of Aites, Ctésifon, and Araunicoros is the rich heart of Caďinas; and the Caďinorians were busy building cities in their new eastern territories. The seaports of Čeiy, meanwhile, were the centers of trade for the south of the continent. Even today a fortunate Xurnese is likely to be called “rich as an Orčau (Worčal) trader.”

The Skourene cities have seen better days. The Jippirasti first plundered the cities, then came to live in them. But their misunderstanding only added to a long decline caused by war, ecological stress, and unadaptive institutions. The Gurdagor were no kinder than the invaders— except back at home: Gurdago itself was the only city still run like the autonomous free cities of old. Undertaxed, and never self-sufficient in food, however, it required an empire to keep itself in business.
