1683 — Consolidation of the great war

It was relatively easy to break the power of Munkhâsh; surprisingly difficult to reduce the last remnants of the Demon Realm. As they neared home the ktuvoks had better supply lines, and an increased strength borne of desperation, while both Ervëa and Attafei were stretched thin. Still, they marched on. The last Eynleyni surrendered; now they were fighting ktuvoks. The ktuvoks weren’t used to doing their own fighting and dying; they didn’t like it.

It was all over by 1667. Attafei and Ervëa met face to face at last. It is said, perhaps apocryphally, that Ervëa, expecting a reciprocal courtesy, began by saying, “Your god Jippir has granted us a great victory.” “It is so, praise Jippir,” replied Attafei.

There was some idea of massacring all the ktuvoks, though they were now begging for mercy; however, neither emperor had the stomach for it. The ktuvoks who were left were placed under military control; those who resisted were killed. Less than half of the ktuvoks, perhaps 10,000, remained after the long war.

Ervëa encouraged Caďinorians to settle the valley of the Shkónoro, which he renamed Sarnaure (‘Eastland’, V. Sarnáe) to attract settlers. He did what he could to rehabilitate the Eynleyni; he found them fairly intractable as subjects. As a later emperor complained, “They react indifferently to kindness; show no loyalty either to their new masters, or to the ktuvoks, or among themselves; and seem unable to act, now that there was no one to tell them what to do.”

In later years Ervëa tidied up loose ends in the west, reaching the mountains in the northwest, taking over Kenand, and helping Metauro to chase out the múrtani (1671).

Attafei wasted no time collecting on his bet; 200,000 Tžuro converted to Jippirasti on one day. He preached to the conquered Eynleyni, but when he made no converts he decided to plunder them instead. He divided the conquered lands into estates for his generals, assigning Eynleyni in lots to work them as slaves. Munkhâshi conquered, the next task of the Kurundasti (declared Attafei, speaking as always for Jippir) was the conquest of Skouras. At the age of seventy, he began to make plans for the conquest.

The little Wede:i state of Do:ju was occupied in 1667, when it presumed to try to get some of its territory back while Attafei was occupied in the north. Mei Ros was conquered in 1675 as punishment for an alliance with Gurdago. The Tžuro also expanded their foothold on Qarau territory.

A palace revolution in Weinexi (1682) and the assassination of the emperor Murešopivu formally ended the empire of Axunai. In the next few decades Weinexi was ruled by a succession of generals; the other Axunašin lands were ruled by governors calling themselves nivee. Only in Amurineli and Tandau is there some concern for justice as well as power.

In Skouras, Peligi acquired Kolatimand in 1670, a move which threatened to disrupt Gurdagor control over the Littoral, and theoretically would allow a march on Guṭḷeli by land. Gurdago immediately declared war, and the two Skourene superpowers spent the better part of a decade attacking each other— ending about where they started, but weaker. Both sides used the Tžuro to justify their empires, but neither moved against them. The Tžuro had been pushed back once; surely the two great powers would push them back again.
