language processing including Chinese named entity extraction, and
automatic annotation of Chinese text, and Chinese/English machine
   translation.

 Education

 * Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. 1998-Present
Master's Candidate in Linguistics Department with emphasis on
     Computational Linguistics.
   GPA: 3.93 (A=4)

 * Brigham Young University, Provo, UT. 1988-95
Graduated Magna Cum Laude with bachelor degree. Majored in Computer
     Science and Mandarin Chinese.
   GPA: Overall 3.91, CS 3.81, Chinese 3.97 (A=4)

place names, dates, amounts) extraction system.
      * Wrote interfaces for and developed Chinese and English
language processing systems. Systems included a Chinese
document search system, a Chinese text information extractor,
        and an English text parser.
      * Created a Tcl/Tk tool for users to mark-up texts with
SGML. Tool became very popular with co-workers.

   Computer Programmer, Department of Defense
   January, 1995 - August, 1995

      * Supported and developed several multilingual applications for
the analysis and teaching of language, especially the
interface for a system for Chinese language students.
      * Wrote my department's web site.
      * Received a cash award for my contributions.

   Language Student, Department of Defense
   January, 1994 - July, 1994

      * Translated and analyzed a variety of language materials.
      * Also received a cash award for my contributions.

Teacher's Assistant, BYU Computer Science Department
   September, 1993 - December, 1993

      * Assisted students and graded homework in a computational
	theory course.
      * Conducted weekly help sections.

Missionary, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
   January, 1990 - December, 1991

      * Worked with ethnic Chinese in Houston, Texas, on a volunteer

      * Skilled in C, C++, Perl, Tcl/Tk, Java programming and UNIX
usage. Have also programmed in Lisp and Visual Basic.

      * Experienced in various aspects of Chinese software, including
input methods, segmentation, encoding conversion, web design,
        and Chinese natural language processing.

      * Fluent in written (traditional and simplified characters) and
        spoken Mandarin Chinese.

      * Examples of Web and CGI design, as well as Java, Visual Basic,
and Perl programs dealing with Chinese and Chinese NLP, can be
        seen at http://www.mandarintools.com and
        http://www.chinesecomputing.com.

 Papers

      * A Chinese Named Entity Extraction System. Paper presented at
8th Annual Conference of the International Association of
Chinese Linguistics at Melbourne, Australia; July, 1999.
