Was one of the first rural mail carriers out of Fergus Falls, MN. This information came from the Fergus Falls falls journal of Fergus Falls, MN. About the year 1922. Around the world seven times- Mr. Davis, mail carrier on route 1, from this city, given agreeable surprise Willard A.
Davis, rural mail carrier on route no. 1 out of this city, was given an agreeable surprise by his route patrons in the Dane Prairie and Buse townships Sunday. He and his family were invited out to take dinner at the Johnson home there and they were then told there was to be something of a neighborhood picnic to which they were invited. Mr. Davis had no suspicion that the picnic was arranged for him until her arrived at the town hall when he found something like seventy-five automobiles assembled. It was a perfect day and a big picnic dinner was served. Everyone who came brought a sack of corn or oats and Mr
Davis will have a very liberal winters supply for his horses. Route no. 1 was probably the first rural route established in Ottertail Co. co. And Mr Davis has been carrying the mail there ever since it establishment, eighteen years ago. It is computed that during that time he has traveled a total of 130,000 miles, which means he could have gone around the world seven times and started on his eighth journey if he had traveled in a straight line. It is a remarkable record and has been one of the most accurate and efficient carriers in the state. The following item is from the Fergus Falls, MN. Journal of June 1934. Wore out six automobiles. Mr. Davis retired mail carrier also wore out 22 houses and 2 motorcycles. Dane prairie June 27, 1934. A party was held Sunday in honor of Mr. Davis our retired mail carrier, at Oscar Asness' near wall lake. The day was perfect and a large crowd turned out. Each brought eats and dinner and supper were served. A program in the afternoon consisted of songs by the audience directed by Mrs Warren Johnson. Selection by the Dalton 4 H club; vocal selections by Harvey Lee and the D.P.X. quartet and short talks by Carl Tollefson, N. B. Thompson, Jens Berger and Arnt Huseby. These were patrons on route no. 1 through the thirty years Mr. Davis served and Mr. Davis stated that before he retired he was bringing mail to the third generations of some of the old timers. He also told of some of his experiences while serving as carrier; that he wore out twenty two horses, two motorcycles, and six cars and if all this had been placed before him when he began he thought he would have lost courage. Nevertheless time went on and he served faithfully until his time to retire. This party was sponsored by the D. P.X. club and Carroll Mcdonald gave a few remarks in their behalf. Mr Davis was presented a gift at remembrance of the occasion for which he responded fittingly with thanks and appreciation. Based on the facts of the first item, I figure he traveled 11 times around the earth and stared well into his 12th time.
Was named Willie, but he changed it to Willard.
His parents were from NJ (father) and WI (mother).
