She is clearly given as Jilda Madine Crane, an unusual and therefore easily-tracked name in the birth records of her children. Those birth records securely link her to Melvin Augustus Temple. What gets confusing is her marriage records with Clayton Hollis. There, her name is Hila Madine Temple, which indicates she was either a widow or she divorced Melvin Temple prior to 1933. However, her marriage records give her parents as David Temple and Florence Crane. In her marriage to Clayton Hollis, moreover, they both claimed this as a first marriage. To date, no marriage of a David Temple and Florence Crane has been found, so it may be possible that Hila was born out of wedlock, knew who her father was, and at times went by one or the other surname. No one named Hila with a mother named Florence was found in 1910. In 1910, no combination of David and Florence was found with surname Temple. No female with surname Crane was found with mother Florence in 1910. The same was true of females surnamed Temple. No David temple was found in Essex Co., NY or adjacent counties in 1910. So, Hila remains a mystery.
