This is was completely unexpected as we had no oral history about this. William Carter was born a twin and his brother was also named William. We think his mother was married at least 3 times...and may have had the maiden name Francis (or Fannie) Grimes (still unconfirmed...our oral history and death certificates say Rainwater was her name, but no plausible documentation supports this so far). A Francis Grimes marries a John Toney in Rankin County MS first and has several children (another of my uncle's closest autosomal matches share Francis as the common ancestor...although his tree is not too accurate). Then a Francis Tony marries a Henry Carter in Amite County a year before the twins are born. Then she's in the 1870 census with all her kids (including 1 year old twins) with James Martin in Amite County.
