Dujring this time, Maryland supported the 31 Jan 1944 bombardment of Kwajalein. Later supported the 14 Jun 1944 attack on Saipan. While at anchor on 18 Jun 1944, Maryland was attacked by a Mitsubishi G4M3 "Betty" which hit the ship with a torpedo on the port side near the bow. Damage was slight, but Maryland had to move to Pearl Harbor for repairs. She returned to action in time to support bombardment activities from 12 - 15 Sep 1944 in the Palau Islands. Maryland then supported the invasion of the Philippines starting with the battle for Leyte from 18-20 Oct 1944. As part of the continuing operations, Maryland took part in a battle agains the Japanese battleships Fuso and Yamashrio and their supporting cruisers. Both battleships were set afire and the remaining supporting ships withdrew. While patrolling the Surigao in Nov 1944, Maryland was attacked by kamikazes.
