Apparently absent in the 1860 census. His identification as James Temples, husband of Angelina Temple of Edgefield Co., SC is based on timing, lack of alternatives, and name similarity, but requires proof. Also, they were first cousins (though by adoption in the case of Angelina), so they were positioned closely to each other. Finally, his first child was named Stevens, and James Pickens' father, though named Seaborn, was enumerated in 1900 as Stephens Temples. Stevens' death certificate named his father John, however, and his mother was Angeline.
