The circumstantial evidence is pretty strong, given timing, lack of candidates, and the census records where Permelia Temples, a probable sibling of his, was enumerated with Malissa Eva (Ferguson) Temples in 1870. Also, the death certificate of J.W. Temples, b 1867 MS, says that his parents were A.F. and Eva (Ferguson) Temples, both of MS. It looks like Anderson Flowers Temple(s) had two wives at the same time - one in Attala Co., and the other in Newton Co. This may be why some secondary sources try to put J.W.'s birth year in 1865, to deconflict his birth with his August 1865 marriage to Mary Ann Hughes. That may well be true, as birth years were often unknown precisely, but it also means that Malissa Eva Ferguson divorced him prior to Aug 1865. Even with the jiggering of J.W.'s birth date into 1865 (as some secondary sources have made it), that means they divorced within 6 months of the birth of J.W. An alternative is that Malissa Eva was married to an A.F. Temples who died in the Civil War, but that means the birth of J.W. Temples has to be moved back to 1865 from the year in the official records, and that such a person needs to be found for proof. All things considered, I believe that this person is Anderson Flowers Temple and that he had two simultaneous families for a brief period, and that the families may known of each other. However, others think that the initials A.F. are a mistake, and that he was actually John Felton Temple. In this latter case, he would be the J.F. Temple who served in the Civil War.<br>Find-A-Grave says that James William Temples and Absalom Felton Temples were brothers, and that their mother was Melissa Aveline (Ferguson) Temples. However, other research indicates that Absolam Felton Temples was the son of John Flowers Temple and Iantha Lucretia Rosamond - and thus may be misplaced with James William Temples.
