He was enumerated on 25 Apr 1940 with his father and his brother Calvin, and he was the respondent to the enumeration questions. That means he was clearly at home, though he had no occupation. Eight days earlier, he was enumerated as an inmate in the Mississippi State (Insane) Hospital, and had been there for at least the past five years. There are no other known Clintons with whom he might be confused. Perhaps the one in the asylum only claimed to be Clinton Temple, but that really doesn't explain why the hospital officials reported him to be Clinton. The alternative was that he was allowed out away from the hospital, but that doesn't explain how he got to be considered the head of the family when enumerated with his father and younger brother.
