Said to have refused commission as a colonel because he claimed insufficient knowledge of military tactics.  He may be the William S. Temple that transferred from Company I, 15th Regiment of Virginia Cavalry after 1864 into the headquarters of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Division of the 9th Army Corps in North Carolina.  Paroled on 14 Apr 1865, if this is he.  The alternative is that the William S. was William Skyrin, but he had served in the artillery.  In August 1870 he was a farmer in Elizabeth City, Pasquotank, NC.<sup><a href="sources.htm#32483" class="lnk">32483</a></sup>  His farm was then amidst several farms apparently owned by his freed slaves, some of whom adopted the name Temple. Lived most of his life in Los Angeles.  His parents were from England (father) and France (mother).<p>Possibly the William T. Temple enumerated in NJ in 1930.<p>CA death records give William T. Temple, with parents of the same surnames as his, who died on the same day as William Thomas Temple, but with birth years 20 years apart.  The explanation is unclear.
