Temple comes from the close association of his son Russell Richard with Joseph Marshall Temple's son Bert.  Bert and Russell were rooming together in 1913, so the assumption is that they were related somehow, and thus may well be first cousins.  However, church records gave his name as William H. Tempel when he married Maria Ritter, so this conclusion may be in doubt.  The thing that unites them is their names in the marriage records of their son, Bion Temple - his unique name was the key. He appeared again as a 4th Corporal on the muster roll of Captain Gilmore Hays' Company B, of the First Regiment of Washington Territory Volunteers, Army of the United States.  He enlisted for 3 months' service on 14 Oct 1856.<p>A miscellaneous record indicates that he received scrip # 1516 in the amount of $ 25, but the date in the transcription is very misleading, as it said that was 29 Nov 1801, which predated Lewis and Clark.  More likely, the date was 1891, and was a typo.<p>His widow later applied for a pension on the basis of his wartime service.
