So the conclusion that William Edwin Temple was their son is circumstantial, though based on timing, exact location, exact relationship to his aunt, and a family use of Edwin as a name, possibly as a namesake for an uncle Edwin. It is hard to reconcile William Elbridge's claims, as family recollections are that he spun tales of all sorts, so wading through them to actual facts is difficult.  One of these stories is about his going by the name William Barton, possibly about his being adopted by Bartons (or vice versa?).
