One Atlas Smith lived near them, and is either named for the same person (a third party named Atlas) or something else was going on there. He gave Gastain in his marriage license application.  His father's estate papers make his middle name Augustine, but he also appears with Augustus.<p>Although undocumented, he may have had a wife before Sarah Oldham.  The problem is the dates given in different sources for his son John Washington's birth year.  All sources, from census to death records and secondary genealogies give a date before William married Sarah.  The problem concluding that, though, is William's age - since he was apparently only 19 when he married Sarah.  Had his son John been born as early as the 1838 or 1839 cited in the records, William would have been only 13 or 14.  While undeniably biologically possible, it is extremely unlikely. While there were some Williams B. Temple in Philadelphia at the time, none seems to have married a Helen, so the question remains to be seen whether they actually married.
