His father sold land in Bethlehem, MA, in February 1793 but didn’t buy land in CT until 1794.  In the 1870 US census for Bloomfield, Fillmore Co, MN, his birth state is shown as VT, but his son probably answered for him.  We know that he was not born in VT because the family didn’t move there until after 1801." I think it is unlikely he is the William Temple who is buried in Old Bethel Cemetery, Sparta, IL, because that man's birth date was 10 Sep 1787.  That would make the one buried in Sparta, IL, William, son of John and Elizabeth (Marshall) Temple. His middle name appears in his son Abraham's death certificate as Yarnell.<p>John Jameson provided the following on William and his family:<br>An 1894 biography (Encyclopedia of Delaware County [PA] - Wileyin) of grandson James H. Temple (your#9295) (eldest son of William & Mary Temple's  son Abraham Y. Temple [your#7588]) says: "William Temple, paternal  grandfather of the subject of this sketch, was a native of New Jersey, and  the eldest of a family of four sons, the others being Andrew, Azariah, and  Levi. William Temple married Mary McGowen and was the father of seven  children; John C., Abner, Abram (father), Jane, Mary, and two who died in  infancy. He lived to be fifty-nine years of age, dying about 1858, and his  wife died at the age of sixty-eight." In this deed William and wife Mary Magdelena,of Penn Twp. sold 43 acres of land for $280.00. This same piece of land was conveyed to William Temple from Mary Doctor on 10 May 1831.  Mary Doctor received a Land Warrant (#18) on 25 Mar 1816 which was accepted May 1816 (PA Hist.& Museum Commission, Harrisburg).  The Patent (Book #H23-109) bearing the date of 7 Feb 1825, containing 175 acres. Because of the age on his grave marker, some put the birth date precisely at 23 Nov 1801, but he clearly did not know his birth date the precisely.  The 1860 census put it as 1787, which is almost certainly wrong.  He appeared in the census in November 1850 in Wayne Twp., Mifflin, PA.<sup><a href="sources.htm#10671" class="lnk">10671</a></sup>  Had no occupation in the 1850 census.  In July 1860 he was a laborer in Wayne Twp., Mifflin, PA.<sup><a href="sources.htm#59932" class="lnk">59932</a></sup>  William died on 23 January 1870 at the age of 68 in Mifflin Co., PA.<sup><a href="sources.htm#126852" class="lnk">126852</a></sup>  Buried in Morrison Cemetery, Kistler, PA.  His death date has as much controversy as his birth date, apparently, Find-A-Grave notes tha the Lewistown Gazette, dated 30 May 1877, said he died 22 May 1877.  Given the popularity of the name, though, it mahy well be another William who died in 1877.  He has reference number RLT # U373.<sup><a href="sources.htm#1363" class="lnk">1363</a></sup>  In the 1850 census, there is no distinction between his siblings and his children, so it is difficult to know which children are assigned to whom.  However, I suspect he and his wife gave erroneous ages.  I believe they are the same people enumerated in 1860 as William and Avis, but they were born in 1787/1797 respectively in 1860.<p>Enumerated next door to Oliver S. Temple in 1850, indicating some relationship. However, that would also mean that William G. as presented here would not be their son, since they married in 1852.
