While operating off Okinawa Gunto, Nansei Shoto, the Kimberly was attacked bya a Japanese plane which crashed into a gun mount on the ship.  The intensity of the explosion which followed and the nature of the resulting damage indicated that the plane carried a bomb, estimated at 200 pounds.  A fire broke out which was immediately extinguished,  The ship prompltly circled the area searching for survivors who may have been blown overboard by the force of the explosion.  A whaleboat, with two life rafts, conducted an extensive search of the surrounding waters, but no trace of Willard Temple could be found.  The Secretary of the Navy, James Forrestal, indicated that he was probably blown overboard and lost, as his name never showed up in any prisoner of war camps.  Willard died on 26 March 1945 at the age of 35 in Pacific.<sup><a href="sources.htm#126748" class="lnk">126748</a></sup>  Initially missing in action, his status was changed to killed in action on Okinawa 12 months after his loss in action.
