His ashes were retained in OR. The Salem News, 11 Jul 2010, reported "Civil war veteran Thomas Jefferson Temple was brought home to rest at the family plot in Grove Hill Cemetery Saturday. Over a century after he enlisted with the 19th Ohio Voluntary Infantry (OVI) and re-enlisted with the 115th Ohio K Company, Temple was given a memorial service befitting a soldier who fought to preserve the union of the United States of America. Greenford resident, Sgt. Ken Meek of the 61st OVI delivered the eulogy that spoke of Temple's military service and family life in Hanoverton. Descendants of Temple from across Ohio gathered together with re-enactors from both Union and Condederate groups to memorialize Temple. Temple's cremated remains were retrieved from Oregon by Pat and Suzanne Temple when Suzanne began tracing the family genealogy and found where Temple had passed away at the age of 79." Had a dual wedding with sister Sarah Ann.
Provided by Alan Draves of Cridersville, OH: From Full Heart Family News, November 2010, Wapakoneta, OH, "Temple Comes Home," by Melanie Fullenkamp.
This past Summer was anything but typical for the Temple family of Wapakoneta. Their unique and amazing story took place about this time a year ago. "When my parents passed away I was the collector of all the pictures," shares Suzanne Temple, the art instructor at Wapakoneta High School. "For Christmas this past year I put together genealogy scrapbooks for my children. Then I felt it was time to put together one for my husband's family."
After researching online and gathering information from her husband, Patrick's family as far back as she could find, ending up in England. More research brought her back home to the most incredible experience. Suzanne ran across more than just valuable information about Pat's great, great grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Temple born in Hanoverton, Ohio in 1840, the oldest of nine children. She found Great Great Grandpa Temple himself.
Thomas Jefferson Temple married a local girl with whom he had a son while he was serving in the Civil War. When he returned home his wife had passed away and his wife's parents were raising his son. His son was Patrick Temple's great grandfather.
Records show that Thomas remarried and went out west to Colorado, Missouri, Michigan. Suzanne was able to acquire a civil war photo, and learned that Thomas had served in the Union Army in Ohio. While conducting her research she found a 5-year old article about a mental hospital in Salem, Oregon where "a room with no name" is still home to numerous crematorium urns (the same hospital where the movie One Flew Over the Cuckoos' Nest was filmed).
As it turned out, Thomas' cremated remains were found to be among those that were never collected, often due to a negative stigma where mental illness is concerned. Patrick's great, great grandfather had ended up there with dementia in 1919. "What are the chances of me coming across this online?" Suzanne shares, "Patrick was pretty amazed when he came home from work and I told him I had found his great, great grandfather's remains and they were going to be shipped to us at Christmastime."
The family quickly acquired the death certificate and after her husband wrote 'a letter to the facility requesting that the remains be sent to him, they received the urn in the mail the day after Christmas. Incredibly, also included was a photo and doctors' documentation of Thomas right before he passed away.
Those events led to one of the most meaningful family vacations ever. After making their plans, the family traveled leisurely along the Ohio River to East Liverpool, then to Dover where their daughter lives, and ended up in Hanoverton in time for their annual Peddler Days festival. Added to the event list this year was a very special funeral service for Thomas Jefferson Temple. Following a civil war reenactment and service, the family returned Thomas' remains to their proper resting place. On July 10th, 2010, the Temple family scattered his ashes over the graves of his brother, son, grandsons and great grandsons and community residents shared that they felt honored to be a part of such a powerful experience.
"It was very very, moving," shares Suzanne. "Men dressed in clothing from the civil war period arrived in a wagon for a funeral ceremony. It was held in a beautiful, tiny cemetery up on a hill, with a eulogy and a 21-gun salute." Pat's Aunt Dora Mae Clappsaddle, who liked to look after Pat and his brother since their mother passed away when he was 18, was present as well. The news report of the wedding of Temple-Crouch was published on 26 Dec 1910 and read as follows:
"Richard E. Cruner, clubman, society lion, captain in the First Regiment of the Missouri National Guard and member of a wealthy St. Louis family, i speeding homeward from Virginia, ignorant of the fact that his fiancee, Miss Hal Crouch, daughter of a prominent railroad man, of Texarkana, was married Saturday to T.L.L. Temple, Jr., son of the president of the Southern Pine Lumber Company and rated as a multimillionaire.
"According to advices [sic] received from Texarkana, a double wedding was performed Saturday, made necessary by the unusual geographical location of the city, which is built on the dividing line of Arkansas and Texas. Miss Crouch and Temple were residents of the Arkansas side of Texarkana. Saturday afternoon Temple drove his big six-cylinder automobile to the Crouch residence, ostensibly for the purpose of inviting Miss Crouch to a drive. The young people drove directly to the Miller County court house, procured a marriage license, proceeded to the western side of the city, and were married in Texas.
"Mr. and Mrs. Temple, Jr., then made their way leisurely back to the Arkansas side and made their marriage known to relatives and friends. A friend of the family produced consternation in the household when he raised the question of legality of the marriage. The license had been issued in Miller County, Arkansas, while the ceremony was performed in Bowie County, Texas. The doubt did appear plausible, so the knot was tied a second time by Re. Whaling of the Episcopal Church of Texarkana, Ark. The young Temples had planned to take a six-months' honeymoon trip through Mexico and South America, leaving Sunday morning, but were induced by relatives to postpone the start until after the holidays."
